ChatGPT ads in 2026: how they work, who can buy them, and your first test

The ad sits under ChatGPT's answer, in the middle of someone's task. Write it as the next useful step. Here is how the channel works, and how to test it without guessing.

In short

  • Ads show under ChatGPT's answers for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, labelled and kept apart from the answer. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users see none.
  • OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page lists India as available for self-serve. Businesses billed in India can sign up at ads.openai.com.
  • There are no keywords to bid on. Matching reads the conversation; your context hints and copy tell OpenAI what you sell.
  • A chat card has a 50-character title and a 100-character body. Write one ad group per customer task, and land each click on the page that continues it.
  • Set up the Pixel and the Conversions API with one shared event ID before the first campaign, then judge the channel on real orders after 30 days.

How ChatGPT ads work

Ads sit under ChatGPT's answers, labelled and kept apart, for adults on the Free and Go plans.

  1. Step 1 · The conversationSomeone asks for helpThe person is in the middle of a task: planning a trip, comparing tools, fixing a problem.
  2. Step 2 · MatchingOpenAI picks an adIt reads the conversation, plus wider signals if the person keeps ad personalisation on. Your targeting decides who is eligible.
  3. Step 3 · The adShown under the answerLabelled and kept separate. A click opens your site, or, in a US-only test since 16 September, a labelled chat with a brand's own AI agent.

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and EduNo

The channel moved fast in 2026. OpenAI said on 16 January it would test ads on the Free and Go plans in the US, and testing started on 9 February. A self-serve Ads Manager beta opened to US businesses in May (reported). Europe followed in August, India at the end of August, and Southeast Asia and Taiwan in September.

Can you buy them yet?

Check the country, the category and the buying route before you plan a single ad.

  1. Check your country. OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page lists where the billed business must be based. On 14 October 2026 it listed India as available for self-serve.
  2. Check your category. Not allowed at launch: dating or sexual content, health claims, alcohol and drugs, healthcare, financial or legal services, gambling, and political ads.
  3. Pick a buying route. Self-serve Ads Manager (still in beta), an agency partner, or OpenAI's own Ads Solutions team.
  4. Set up measurement first. Add the Pixel and server events before the first campaign, so every click can be judged against real orders.

Two rules for the creative: claims must be true, with no exaggerated results, fake endorsements or comparison claims you cannot back up, and your ad must never imitate ChatGPT's own interface. It should look like your brand, not like an answer.

Set up a campaign that can learn

Three layers: the campaign holds money and bidding, the ad group holds targeting, the ad holds the words.

  • Campaign. Budget (daily or lifetime), billing and the bid strategy.
  • Ad group. Who is eligible: locations, platforms and audiences, plus context hints that describe what you sell.
  • Ad. A chat card (image, title, text, link), or a product ad built from your product feed.

Ads that fit a conversation

The person has just read an answer. The ad that works is the next useful step in their task.

Title3 to 50 characters
BodyUp to 100 characters
ImageA file you upload

Product adsImage, link and price come from your product feed
  1. Start from the task. Write for the job the person is doing. One ad group per task.
  2. Title: the task plus your answer. Name what you offer and what it does for this task. No slogans.
  3. Body: one proof, one next step. A fact you can prove, then what happens after the click.
  4. Land on the matching page. Send each ad to the page that answers the same task, never your home page, and make its first line repeat the title.

Both examples are fictional brands, with character counts checked. OpenAI checks ad landing pages with a crawler called OAI-AdsBot, whose data is not used for training: make sure robots.txt and your firewall let it reach every landing page.

Measurement you can trust

Two sources, one event ID. Without both, you cannot tell which ads sold anything.

  1. BrowserMeasurement PixelA script on your site fires when a visitor buys or sends a lead. No API key sits in the browser.
  2. ServerConversions APIYour server sends the same events: a second source that does not depend on the browser.
  3. OpenAIOne conversionThe same Pixel ID, event name and event ID mean one action counts once.
  1. Create the data source. Ads Manager gives you a Pixel ID and, for the server, an API key. Keep the key on the server only.
  2. Send standard events. order_created for purchases and lead_created for leads. Amounts go in minor units, so paise, not rupees.
  3. Give each action one ID. Use the same event_id in the Pixel and the server call. Your order or lead number works.
  4. Check that it arrived. OpenAI's monitoring endpoint shows a sample of recent events, marked browser or server.

Conversions count up to 30 days after an eligible click. Two events with different IDs count twice, and amounts sent in rupees instead of paise inflate value a hundredfold.

Be found without paying

Shopping results, product feeds and crawler access decide whether ChatGPT can recommend you at all.

  • Product results. ChatGPT shows products inside its answers. Product feeds go in through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and Shopify and Etsy stores are already connected.
  • Checkout. Buyers pay on your own site: Instant Checkout stepped back in March 2026, so the product page must load fast on a phone.
  • On another platform? Apply through OpenAI's merchant form; feed onboarding runs a waitlist for approved partners.

Your first 30-day test

A new channel earns its budget with real orders. Here is a test you can run, judge and defend.

Size the budget from your own numbers: about 30 conversions at your usual cost per order on Google or Meta is the least you should plan to spend over the test. Then check it clears OpenAI's daily minimum for your currency. If you cannot afford 30 conversions, test fewer ad groups, not a smaller budget per ad group.

WeekDo thisLook at
Before day 1Pixel and server events tested; 2 or 3 ad groups, one per task; matched landing pagesEvents arriving, with no duplicates
Week 1Run on click billing with Maximize clicks. Change nothingImpressions, CTR, cost per click
Week 2Pause the weakest ad group, or rewrite its copy if the task still mattersCTR by ad group
Weeks 3 and 4Move the best ad group to Maximize conversions once sales are trackedCost per real order

Stop or change

After 30 days, cost per real order is well above your best channel, and neither copy nor page changes moved it.

Keep and grow

Cost per real order is close to your best channel. Raise the budget in steps of 20% or less and add one new task at a time.

Risks, rules and rumours

You will never get chat data, keywords or placements near sensitive chats: those are by design. What can change under you already has. Instant Checkout launched and stepped back, billing started on impressions and added clicks, and the country list grew from one to dozens in months.

Still rumour on 14 October 2026: an official ChatGPT Ads MCP server (only third-party servers exist), clean rooms, and Sponsored Agents outside the US.

Work faster with Claude

No official ChatGPT Ads connector exists for Claude. Claude still researches, writes and checks: set up a Claude Project with your product facts and proof points, paste the weekly Ads Manager report, and make every change yourself. Technical teams can have Claude Code build a script that calls only OpenAI's reporting endpoints.

Questions people ask

Can Indian businesses buy ChatGPT ads?

Yes. OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page lists India as available for self-serve, and the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in an available country. The press reported ads going live in India at the end of August 2026, for adults on the Free and Go plans.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

Logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, in countries where ads are live. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users do not see ads, nor do accounts identified as under 18, and no ads appear beside chats about health, mental health or politics.

Can I target keywords in ChatGPT ads?

No. You cannot choose words, topics, interests or ages. You set locations, platforms (web, iOS, Android), custom audiences of at least 25,000 matched people, and context hints that describe what you sell.

Do advertisers see what people type into ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says chats are not shared with advertisers and data is not sold. Advertisers see total views and clicks, and people can switch off ad personalisation, clear ad data or dismiss ads.

How big should a first ChatGPT ads test be?

Plan enough budget to reach about 30 conversions at your usual cost per order from Google or Meta, over 30 days. If you cannot afford 30 conversions, test fewer ad groups rather than a smaller budget per ad group.
