Meta ads in 2026: five strategies that work, and how to run them with Claude
Meta now does most of the targeting. What you still control is the creative, the data and the structure. Here is how to get all three right, in order.
In short
- Every Meta ad passes three stages in order: retrieval, ranking and the auction. Your bid only acts at the last one, so fix creative and data first.
- Keep campaigns few and broad. Advantage+ is now a state a campaign is in, and one setting can switch it off.
- A new idea reaches new people; a new colour does not. Change the angle, the person or the format.
- Feed Meta clean data: the Pixel and the Conversions API with one shared event_id, and an event you can reach about 50 times a week.
- Judge results against your own sales, not Ads Manager alone.
Written from the Meta Ads Playbook 2026 (Edition 01, September 2026). The PDF at the end has every prompt and the one-page checklist.
How Meta picks your ads
Three systems decide who sees your ad, always in the same order. The order tells you what to fix.
- Stage 1 · AndromedaRetrievalIs your ad in the running at all? Meta cuts tens of millions of ads to a few thousand for each person, based on what the ad is. Since July 2026 a generative model works here too.
- Stage 2 · GEM and LatticeRankingWho is likely to act? Models predict the chance a person clicks, buys or signs up. They learn from the conversions you send back.
- Stage 3 · The auctionAuctionWhich ad wins the slot? Bid × estimated action rate × ad quality. The highest total value wins, not the highest bid.
Your bid, budget and cost goal act only at stage 3. If your ad is not picked at stage 1, it never reaches the auction, and more budget changes nothing. A creative problem is a retrieval problem. A conversion-rate problem is a ranking problem. Fix each one at its own stage.
| What you see | Stage | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Budget is there, but the ad set barely spends | Retrieval | Add a new concept: a different angle, person or format. More budget will not help. |
| Plenty of clicks, few sales or leads | Ranking | Check your conversion data and your landing page before you touch the ad. |
| Cost per result creeps up week after week | Retrieval and auction | Launch fresh concepts, then check frequency and the calendar: festive weeks cost more. |
| Every campaign drops on the same day | Platform-wide | Hold still for a week. Meta updates its models for every advertiser at once. |
Strategy 1: build fewer, bigger campaigns
Meta learns from results. Every split you add divides those results, so each part learns slower.
Since early 2026 every new campaign starts with Meta's automation on. Advantage+ is no longer a campaign type you choose: Meta treats a campaign as Advantage+ when three settings line up, and one change can switch it off without a warning.
- Campaign budget on. Advantage+ campaign budget, or a campaign with a single ad set.
- Broad audience. Advantage+ audience on, or targeting by location only.
- Automatic placements. No exclusions at ad set level. Block placements at account level instead.
The starting structure for most accounts
- One campaign per goal. Sales for online orders, Leads for enquiries. A campaign holds one bid strategy and one optimisation goal, so a new goal needs a new campaign.
- One ad set, with campaign budget. Meta states that a campaign with one ad set works the same as an ad set budget, and Advantage+ stays on.
- Fixed limits at account level. Location, minimum age and placement blocks in Advertising Settings apply to every campaign without switching Advantage+ off.
- Exclude customers when you want new ones. Custom audience exclusions are the one audience setting Meta always treats as a rule.
- Name every campaign the same way. Meta has no labels field, so the name is your only filter:
2026-10_SALES_IN_BROAD_DIWALI.
| You want | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A different goal or bid strategy | A new campaign | Meta allows one of each per campaign |
| Results by age, gender or region | Breakdowns in reporting | Split the report, not the delivery |
| A fixed budget for one product | One ad set per campaign, with campaign budget | Works like an ad set budget and keeps Advantage+ on |
| A second ad account to keep delivery apart | Don't | Meta states auction overlap reaches across your ad accounts |
Strategy 2: concepts, not variations
Meta's first filter looks at what your ad is. Twenty versions of one idea look like one ad to it.
Andromeda matches ads to people by the idea, the format and the person on screen. Meta's own guidance says ads that look alike are treated as variations of one creative. A new angle, a different person or a different format reaches a new group, and Meta advises three or more formats.
| Change one per new ad | What changes | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | The reason to buy | A problem solved, a desire, proof, something new |
| Person | Who the ad speaks to | A first-time buyer, a gift buyer, a repeat customer |
| Format | How it looks | Reel 9:16, image 4:5, carousel, creator ad |
| Hook | The first three seconds | A question, the result first, a confession |
Motion counts an ad as a winner when it spends at least ten times the account's median ad. The cheapest formats won most often, so test ideas in cheap formats and spend on production only for the winners. In the same data, accounts spending under about $10,000 a month produced almost no winners from volume testing: at that size, run three to five strong, distinct concepts and refresh them every few weeks.
Strategy 3: feed Meta clean data
Meta's ranking models learn from the sales you report back. Wrong data teaches them the wrong people.
When a sale happens, the Pixel (in the shopper's browser) and the Conversions API (from your server) can both report it. Together they recover sales the browser alone misses. Set up without a shared ID, they count every sale twice, and Meta learns from a false picture.
- Treat the Pixel as your dataset. Your Pixel ID is now your Dataset ID: web, app, offline and messaging events all land in it.
- Add the Conversions API with a shared event_id. Meta removes duplicates only when both events arrive within 48 hours.
- Clean customer details before hashing. Email trimmed and lower-case; phone as digits with the country code (91 for India); then SHA-256, as Meta's docs specify.
- Check the score. Events Manager shows Event Match Quality for every event.
- Send purchase value. Value unlocks value-based bidding and value rules for your best customer groups.
Pick an event you can reach: the 50-a-week test
Work out your daily budget × 7 ÷ your expected cost per event. If the answer is under about 50, Meta will likely flag the ad set as Learning limited. Its own fixes, in order: combine ad sets, widen the audience, raise the budget, or optimise for a more frequent event, such as add to cart instead of purchase.
Strategy 4: test by spending, scale by schedule
Most accounts cannot afford a true A/B test. Let spend pick the winners, then grow them safely.
Worked from Motion's 2026 benchmark figures, $10,000 a month split across two test cells can only detect an ad that converts about 35% better. Smaller real differences stay invisible. So judge ads by where Meta puts the money, at a cost per result you accept.
- Launch new concepts once a week, in one batch. Each new ad counts as a significant edit, so batching keeps resets to one a week.
- Wait at least 72 hours at equal budget. Then cut the ads Meta will not spend on, and keep the ones it funds at a cost you accept.
- Give each winner three to five new hooks. Keep the rest of the ad the same, so you learn which opening works.
- Track cost per winner. (Production cost + test spend) ÷ number of winners. It tells you whether to make more ads or better ones.
| # | Scaling move | How |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Budget scheduling for peaks | Up to 8× the daily budget, each period at least three hours. Meta says it does not restart learning. |
| 2 | Raise budget at the start of a day | Mid-day increases barely land, because budgets are spread across the day. |
| 3 | Loosen a cost or ROAS goal 5 to 10% | Only when budget goes unspent because the goal is too tight. |
| 4 | Combine ad sets | More events per ad set, less overlap, faster learning. |
| 5 | Check the ceilings | Your account's daily spending limit and any ad set spending limits. |
Make one change per campaign per week, and never change a cost goal and the budget in the same week: you will not know which one moved the result.
Strategy 5: measure what is real
Ads Manager reports what it can link to your ads, not what your ads caused. Check it against your own sales every week.
| Number | Where it comes from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total ad spend | Billing, including fees and taxes | The real cost |
| Orders or leads | Your store, CRM or sheet | Your source of truth |
| New customers | First-time buyers in your store | Growth, not repeat buyers |
| Cost per new customer | Total spend ÷ new customers | The number to manage |
| MER | Total revenue ÷ total ad spend | A health check across every channel |
Mark these 2026 changes on every report that compares with last year:
- 12 January: the 7-day view and 28-day view attribution windows were removed.
- 1 June: political and social-issue ads must disclose photorealistic AI people or events.
- 29 July: Marketing API v26.0 removed the Instagram Explore feed placement and poll ads, and locked old Advantage+ shopping campaigns.
- 15 September: the Creator Marketing Hub went global, with Instagram Live ads rolling out from 29 September.
Run it with Claude
Claude reads your ad account through a connector, an MCP server, and you stay the person who approves every change. Start read-only.
| Connector | Made by | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Meta ads MCP server (mcp.facebook.com/ads) | Meta | Reads accounts, results, previews and the Ad Library; can create ads, always paused |
| Windsor.ai | Windsor.ai, listed in Claude's connector directory | One-click install, Meta data beside other sources |
| GoMarble, Copilot plan | GoMarble | Read-only by design, for reports and audits without any risk of changes |
Before you trust a connector, run three tests in ten minutes. First, ask for each ad account's spend for the last seven days and match it to Ads Manager. Second, compare one campaign's spend, results and cost per result in detail. Third, with your rules set to block changes, ask Claude to pause one ad. It must be refused.

READ ONLY. Do not create, edit, pause or delete anything.
Account: <ad account name or ID>
Business: <what we sell, average order value, main goal>
Period: last 30 days, compared with the 30 days before
1. Structure. For every active campaign: objective, budget type, bid strategy,
number of ad sets, spend. Mark any campaign that is not in Advantage+ and name
the condition that broke: campaign budget, audience, or placements.
2. Learning. List ad sets in Learning or Learning limited. Estimate weekly
optimisation events and name the likely cause: small audience, low budget,
tight bid or cost goal, auction overlap, rare event, or too many ads.
3. Creative. Group active ads into concepts (same idea = one concept, even if the
colour or headline differs). Show spend share per concept.
4. Fatigue. For ads live 7+ days, compare the last 7 days with the 7 before:
frequency, click-through rate, cost per result.
5. Tracking. List the conversion events in use and any ad sets whose
attribution setting differs from the rest.
Before you start, repeat back the account name, currency and date range.
If a figure is not available through the tools, write NOT AVAILABLE.

Label every figure READ (from the account) or ESTIMATE (your inference). The PDF has ten more prompts written out in full: a structure check, a concept gap finder, a ten-concept creative brief, a tracking check, the Monday brief, a fatigue watch, a scale plan that waits for your approval, a reality check against your own sales, a competitor scan through the Ad Library, and one that builds a live command-centre dashboard in Claude.
Make it fit your business
The strategies stay the same. The event you optimise for, the set-up and the first angles change.
- Online store. Optimise for purchase with value, or add to cart while you are under about 50 purchases a week. Start with proof (reviews, unboxing), offers and newness.
- Restaurant, clinic, salon or gym. Optimise for leads or calls. Set the location radius at account level, and use an Instant Form with one qualifying question.
- Real estate, education or B2B services. Send qualified leads back from your CRM through the Conversions API, not raw form fills, and use the higher-intent form.
- Selling on WhatsApp. Optimise for conversations first, then report purchases with the ctwa_clid. Reply within 24 hours to open Meta's free 72-hour messaging window.
| When | Run | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | The weekly brief, then at most one change per campaign | 15 min |
| Wednesday | The concept gap finder every second week, then brief new ads | 20 min |
| Friday | The fatigue watch, then launch the week's new concepts in one batch | 15 min |
| First Monday of the month | The account X-ray and a reality check against your own sales | 30 min |
Questions people ask
What is Advantage+ in 2026?
It is a state, not a campaign type. Meta treats a campaign as Advantage+ when it uses campaign budget (or a single ad set), a broad audience and automatic placements. Change one of those and the campaign drops out of Advantage+, often without a warning.
How many ads should a small account run?
In Motion's data of more than 550,000 ads, accounts spending under about $10,000 a month got almost no winners from volume testing. Run three to five clearly different concepts and refresh them every few weeks, instead of many versions of one idea.
Why does Meta report more sales than my store?
Meta reports what it can link to your ads, and unmatched browser and server events count a sale twice. Compare Meta's purchases with your own orders for one day: a ratio near 2.0 means the events are not sharing an event_id.
Does raising a budget by more than 20% reset learning?
Meta publishes no 20% figure. Its guidance says large budget changes may count as a significant edit. Budget scheduling for peaks, up to eight times the daily budget, is the move Meta says does not restart learning.
Is it safe to connect Claude to a Meta ad account?
Start read-only, prove that a blocked action is refused, and keep switching ads on blocked. Meta's ads MCP server lets a full-control admin block agent actions per ad account, and Claude never sees your password.
